Anybody who falls short of these standards will have his or her conduct examined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<\/strong><strong>inciple 1: Responsibility and Accountability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police \u00a0officers \u00a0are \u00a0personally \u00a0responsible \u00a0and \u00a0accountable \u00a0for \u00a0their \u00a0actions \u00a0or omissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<\/strong><strong>inciple 2: Honesty and Integrity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police officers are honest, act with integrity and do not compromise or abuse their position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<\/strong><strong>inciple 3: Lawful Orders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police officers obey lawful orders and refrain from carrying out any orders they know, or ought to know, are unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>Police officers abide by the law.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<\/strong><strong>inciple 4: Use of Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When \u00a0police \u00a0officers \u00a0use \u00a0force \u00a0it \u00a0is \u00a0only \u00a0to \u00a0the \u00a0extent \u00a0that \u00a0is \u00a0necessary \u00a0and reasonable to obtain a legitimate objective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<\/strong><strong>inciple 5: Authority, Respect and Courtesy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police officers do not abuse their powers or authority and respect the rights of all individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Police officers act with self-control and tolerance, treating members of the public and colleagues with respect and courtesy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<\/strong><strong>inciple 6: Equality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police officers act with fairness and impartiality. They do not discriminate on the grounds of sex, race, colour, language, religion or belief, political or other opinion, national or social origin, disability, age, sexual orientation, property, birth or other status.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<\/strong><strong>inciple 7: Confidentiality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police officers treat information with respect and access or disclose it only for a legitimate police purpose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<\/strong><strong>inciple 8: Fitness for Duty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police officers when on duty or presenting themselves for duty are fit to carry out their responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<\/strong><strong>inciple 9: General Conduct<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police officers, on duty, act in a professional way.<\/p>\n<p>Police officers do not behave in a manner which brings, or is likely to bring, discredit on the police service or that undermines or is likely to undermine public confidence in the Royal Gibraltar Police, whether on or off duty.<\/p>\n<p>Police \u00a0officers report any action \u00a0taken against\u00a0 them for \u00a0any criminal offence or conditions imposed by a court.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pr<\/strong><strong>inciple 10: Challenging and Reporting Improper Conduct<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police officers challenge and, when appropriate, take action or report breaches of this code and the improper conduct of colleagues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The principles set out in this Code reflect these expectations and every police officer must attain these standards.
